Position Value

League meeting report · 2021 – 2025

Methodology. Output value = points produced per active start at each lineup slot. Replacement value uses a bottom-3 starter weekly baseline per NFL position (avoids injury-week noise). What-if scenarios rebuild the optimal lineup from each team's actual roster under each alternate template — this strips out owner start/sit luck so the template effect is the only thing changing.
League context. The lineup template already changed in 2025: the dedicated TE slot was dropped and replaced with a second FLEX (RB/WR/TE). This report measures the impact of that change and explores four further alternatives the league can discuss.

2025 — Output Value by Lineup Slot

Active starts only · sorted by avg PPG · ranges show min / p25 / median / p75 / max
What this is: how many fantasy points each lineup slot actually produced per week in 2025. A high avg means that slot reliably drives team scoring; a low avg means it's a roster filler. The range chart shows predictability — narrow ranges are consistent contributors, wide ranges are boom-or-bust. Ask: are K and D/ST still pulling their weight relative to flex players?

Reading the table. Starts = number of player-weeks that slot was active. p10 / p90 = the floor and ceiling — 10% of starts scored below p10, 10% scored above p90 — so the gap between them shows how wide the slot's outcomes are. Std Dev is the typical spread around the average (low = predictable, high = boom-or-bust). Negative Min values are real ESPN outcomes (INTs, fumbles, missed FGs).

Trend — Avg PPG by Slot (2021–2025)

Tracks how each slot's per-week scoring has shifted over the last five seasons.
What this is: year-over-year shift in each slot's per-week scoring. A flat line means stable value; a sloping line means the position is gaining or losing importance over time. Watch K and D/ST especially — if their lines trend down while flex trends up, the case for dropping them gets stronger each year. Trends are more reliable than any single season because they smooth out hot/cold years.

All-Time — Output Value by Slot (2021–2025)

Aggregated over all five seasons. TE is included even though 2025 removed its dedicated slot.
What this is: the same per-slot scoring metric, aggregated across all five seasons for a more stable baseline. Std Dev is week-to-week spread — low = predictable, high = volatile. The dedicated TE row is kept so you can compare its old-slot output to what flex absorbs now. Treat all-time as 'what these slots do on average' and the 2025 table above as 'what they're doing right now.'
Reading the table. Starts = number of player-weeks across all five seasons. p10 / p90 = the floor and ceiling (10% of starts scored below / above these). Std Dev measures week-to-week volatility (low = predictable). Negative Min values are real ESPN outcomes (INTs, fumbles, missed FGs).

2025 — Position Scarcity (VORP)

Baseline = bottom-3 active starters at the position each week, averaged across the season.
Scarcity gap = top-12 avg − baseline avg. It's the every-week edge you get from owning an elite player at that position instead of a replacement-level one. Big gap = scarce, draft early. Small gap = replaceable, stream from waivers. Note: compare same-start-count positions (QB to K to D/ST) most confidently — RB/WR baselines are noisier because more players start at those spots league-wide.

Reading the table. Top-3 Avg / Top-12 Avg = avg PPG of the best 3 and 12 starters at that position. Baseline = the bottom-3 starters per week (replacement level). Scarcity Gap = Top-12 − Baseline — the every-week edge from owning an elite player there. Players Qualified = count with at least 5 starts.

All-Time Scarcity (2021–2025)

Same metric averaged across all five seasons. Stable scarcity ranking = stable draft priority.
Why the all-time view matters: a position with a big gap year after year is genuinely scarce; a one-season spike could just be a fluke rookie class or a wave of injuries. If 2025's ranking differs sharply from the all-time ranking, ask whether something structural changed — a scoring tweak, a rule change, a hot/cold position-wide year — before drawing conclusions for next season's draft.
Reading the table. Same columns as the 2025 scarcity table, but averaged across all five seasons. A position whose Scarcity Gap stays large year after year is genuinely scarce; a single big year may be noise.

Top VORP Players (2021–2025)

Per-game VORP = avg starting points − season baseline at that position. Min 5 career starts.
What this is: every qualifying player ranked by per-game VORP, which puts all positions on a single scale. A 12-PPG TE and a 25-PPG QB can rank similarly because they're each that much above their replacement level. Total VORP on the right adds it up across all their starts — useful for spotting 'season MVPs' who racked up edge week after week, not just one or two huge games.

What-Ifs — Lineup Construction

Each scenario rebuilds the optimal lineup from every team's actual roster under the alt template. 'Actual' = what teams really scored under the lineup in effect that season. Optimal-under-current isolates the template effect from owners' start/sit decisions.
How to read this: each scenario rebuilds every team-week's optimal lineup from their actual roster under an alternate template. The Δ PPG isolates the template effect — it ignores start/sit decisions, so '+5 PPG' means the change adds 5 points to the ceiling, not necessarily to real outcomes. Use these to debate dropping slots, adding slots, or tweaking scoring before next year's draft.
Current (2025)

Regular-Season Outcomes Flipped

How many H2H matchups would have produced a different winner. Doesn't re-seed playoffs.
What this measures: how many head-to-head matchups would have ended differently under each scenario. A low % means the change shifts everyone's scores roughly uniformly — winners stay winners. A high % means the change reshuffles competitive balance, which would also change playoff seeding (though this table doesn't re-seed; it just counts game-by-game flips).

Championship Game Re-Run

Same playoff bracket, alternate scoring. ✓ = champion changes under this scenario.
What this is: the actual playoff matchups rescored under each scenario's template. ✓ means the title would have changed hands. A scenario that frequently flips championships is making a structural difference, not just adding noise. Caveat: we keep the actual bracket — we don't re-seed playoffs even when the regular-season order would have changed.

Median Scoring — Alternate W-L Records

Each owner gets a 2nd W/L per week based on whether they outscored the league median. Tracks how unlucky owners (high scores, low wins) would have done.
How to read this: the Median column shows what each owner's record would be if every week they got a W for scoring above the league median (a L for below). The H2H column shows their actual record; the gap reveals schedule luck. A median W meaningfully higher than the H2H W = unlucky owner who scored well but kept drawing the highest-scoring opponent. The Combined column is what their record looks like under a 'H2H + median' format some leagues use.
